Summer Staple Item | ad

I am always on the hunt for a new summer wardrobe - although this has been put on halt for a few years whilst I have been at university (and put on far too much weight). However, my prayers have been answered thanks to Eles Clothing!

Eles Clothing is a wholesale retailer who supplies the newest fashion from the United Kingdom. They have not just women's, but men and children's and also accessories. The brands range from Next, Top Shop, Laura Ashley, Jane Norman and many more.

You can find them on their blog, Facebook, and Twitter.

Apologies for some changes in light - the clouds had a mind of their own today!

I searched through their catalogue and found the most amazing top to base my summer wardrobe on. I primarily wear black leggings because they go with everything, and they hide my legs (until I get my ass to the gym next month, anyway). Due to this, I won't include any picture of me with it on because of a simple lack of body confidence.

I have to say, I couldn't be happier with it. The material is lovely; it flows in all the right ways and doesn't cling to my body in unflattering ways. It is also long enough that it covers my bum in leggings!

The spaghetti straps are adjustable, so you can have the top as high or as low as you prefer. I personally go for a slightly lower placement, just because I cover my legs (remember, legs or cleavage!).

I love, love, love, the pattern. The floral pattern is quite in this summer (I think...) and can liven up any block colour. As I said before, I wear this with black leggings, but it could go with any teal, black, or white colours.

I usually shy away from patterned tops myself, but I thought I would take a risk...and it really paid off.

This is something I will be wearing all summer - look out for it when I post my Disney World vlogs!

I would 100% recommend this company for online clothes shopping. They updated me continually with my item, told me when it would be delivered, and reminded me on the day that it would be arriving. The staff were incredibly friendly, and no question is too big. I would love to work with this company again; I couldn't be happier with them!

Safe to say I will be shopping with them again.

Have a look through their catalogue and tell me what your favourite item is in the comments below.

The concept of "beauty"

As a girl I get called every name under the sun because of the way I look; so much so that I am now just expecting a hurl of abuse all the time about it. I know that this is a general thing that tends to happen to females because of the exaggeration in the media of this idealistic representation of beauty, which frankly is beyond inaccurate. But why should we have to endure this? Who is out there drawing up this blueprint of how every female should look, and saying that if they don't look like a certain way then they are instantly inferior and in the firing line of an endless tail of abuse? I would like to find this person and give them a good kick up the ass and a reality check.

It appears that this concept of beauty stems from magazines and so called 'high fashion'. For example, lets address size zero. First of all, can I reaffirm the fact that in absolutely no way in hell is this either healthy or ideal, unless of course you have an abnormally fast metabolism and there is no way you can help this. Who on earth should go out their way to make themselves look like a lollipop? I know that many young girls are heavily influenced by these models they see in the likes of "Vogue" and all these other trashy things marketed simply to change the mentality of otherwise happy girls. Do these magazines not realise the sheer power they can have over the likes of a 13 year old girl who is trying to fit in with these unbelievably misjudged representations of a woman? They present this screwed up ideology that for some absurd reason looking like a skeleton is 'beautiful'. That is not beautiful in any way. Take for example this picture:

I am not sure who this is, but this is from a Spanish Vogue fashion show, and do you know what the Google image result was for this? "The Modern Cool". I mean, are you actually kidding me? She just looks unhealthy and malnourished and I just want to shove a burger down her throat. I cannot fathom how anyone would be happy like this. I for one have gone through this stage, yes, however I was not heavily influenced by all this size zero bullshit as it sort of occurred a bit after my early teenage years. Do these high fashion things not realise that a lot of young girls aspire to be like the things they idolize, and actually can cause serious long term damage to their bodies because of serious matters like starvation and eating disorders?

I also have a serious issue with airbrushing. It's like the magazines who post all this shit are just never satisfied. I think the most current example I can think of is with Jennifer Lawrence. Let me show you this image:

I don't know about you, but I would kill to look like her pre-airbrush. She looks a million times more womanly and less little-girl like. If someone can justify to me why airbrushing occurs like this then please do as I genuinely cannot wrap my head around it. It is almost as if they are projecting this false representation of "perfection" that is quite plainly fake as no one can achieve it. Yet the media continues to brainwash society to believe that this is what a woman should look like. What I do not understand is that Jennifer Lawrence has an incredible figure, and is in no way overweight or whatever (another issue I shall address in a second) yet she is still airbrushed. How can the media project this image? Is there someone somewhere along the line who just thinks "fuck it, lets pretend that everyone who comes in here is stick thin and without blemishes"? No, Photoshop does that shit. No one is perfect, whether you believe it or not. Every single being on the planet has flaws, some may be physical and some may not be, but there is no such thing as a flawless person. So why does the media continue to portray that there is?
As I just mentioned weight issues, I will go with that for my next point. Before I launch in to this one, I want to share with you a few images I found on Tumblr surrounding this issue. I haven't credited them because I am not sure of their original source:

"Maybe if I lose some weight someone
will start to care"

"Everyone around me is losing weight and I feel so fat"

"Everything is fine as long as I am getting thinner"

"You don't deserve to eat. You really don't.
Look at you. You're fat. Your bones are being crushed until all this fat. You did this to yourself. Now you have to pay for it. Starve"

"Maybe if I lost weight I'd be able to smile again"

This is fundamental proof that girls are being both brainwashed and dangerously affected by the shit published by these magazines and other forms of media. On Tumblr, when I searched "weight" I would say that a good 70% are posts similar to those I have shown above. How can there be someone out there who is continuously installing this malfunctioning idea into the heads of teenagers and young adults? I am genuinely shocked at some of the things I found on the internet surrounding weight. There is no upper limit or lower limit on how much someone should weight to be classified as "beautiful". It's almost as if someone has gone around and drawn this imaginary suit that everyone has to fit in to be classed as beautiful. I also found this image of what girls tend to class as a 'perfect body':

I find this quite shocking to be perfectly honest. However, I am going to call some home truths about this. The first thing I want to address is the 'narrow waist'. As a female you will get to an age where your natural figure will show, and this generally means your waist will become defined and you will gain what is known as the "hourglass figure" - this is where your waist narrows slightly and your hips widen. That is what I would say is a gorgeous body shape, rather than this stick-insect thing people seem to want. As for collarbones, they tend to be defined in women whether you are slimmer or bigger. Skinny arms...who the hell wants stick arms? What is wrong with a little meat on your bones, seriously? Ah, the thigh gap. Why do young girls obsess over having a thigh gap? It seems to be the be all and end all at the moment. Newflash for you, girls, I have never had a thigh gap in my entire life. Does that make me fat? Does it fuck. The final point I want to address here is the "boobs" section of this. Here is a serious newsflash for you, girls. If you are ridiculously slim through dieting and whatnot, you will not have boobs. It is how nature goes.

I think the final thing I am going to address here is general image, including the likes of makeup. Looking like you are fresh off the runway seems to be a part of every day life for a lot of young people these days. In recent years there has been a serious increase in the emphasis on fashion, hair, and makeup affecting both males and females. It seems to me that the pressure for anyone to look perfect is at breaking point. I have a younger sister (now 16) who very rarely leaves the house without any makeup on. Where did the acceptance of natural beauty go? I think that a lot of this is down to, shockingly, the media. You always get the pictures of celebrities with no makeup on like ridiculous headlines always focusing on the negative way of how someone looks. It is very rare for there to be a positive comment about how someone looks without makeup on. This seems to get installed in the minds of young people that they will be judged and penalized for leaving the house without looking pristine. The saying that you are your own worst enemy is seriously true. Many young people judge themselves based on what they believe and think others will think - which most the time is not true!

I am going to wrap this up, and stop rambling now. I will definitely make a part two of this article.

I know that this post cannot simply change the world, but I am hoping that it leaves a small part of confidence in any of you who are reading this. Under no circumstances should you change yourself because of something you read, or because someone makes a shitty remark about the way you look. 9 times out of 10 that person is most likely going to be jealous of you in some way. No one is perfect, and you shouldn't strive to be someone that you are not simply to please someone else. You should accept you for the way you are. If you are going through a tough time with people giving you grief because of the way you look then leave me a comment or a tweet, or drop an ask in my tumblr box and I will respond to you personally. I have been through all this shit, and I don't want to watch other people suffer.

You are worth more than the nasty comments.

Keep your head held high and brush them off - don't doubt yourself because of someone else's insecurities.

Confidence is key - once you master being happy with yourself you can conquer the world.

Media Pressures

Hello there, buddies!

NOTE: this is a slightly different tone to my usual posts, please bear that in mind.

If you have been reading my UBC you can probably see a link between this post and my Day 3 post about complimenting. Media pressure is a big issue in today's society, I think. Media is becoming an ever increasing part of our day-to-day lives, and 90% of people are in touch with some kind of media each day.

Now this rant is coming from me and my opinions, just as a little disclaimer. As a girl, I will put my hands up and admit that I do get affected by the media. There are certain areas a girl is sensitive to, such as body image, and the media very skillfully plays on this vulnerability to create nothing less than a shit storm.

The first sort of pressure I want to talk about revolves around fashion. This is coming from someone who really does not give two shits about fashion - as you can probably tell if you know me. There are so many fashion magazines, such as the likes of Vogue, which promote a certain type of fashion. Also, things such as catwalk shows (Fashion Week) showcase so many crazy types of fashion, yet so many young girls aspire to own these items. This I fail to understand.... Why anyone would want to wear 80% of a bird on their head I do not know. This obsession that young girls have developed with fashion still shocks me. When you go shopping, there is hardly any individuality in clothes anymore - they all look the same! Fashion trends are so weird these days too....bring back jelly shoes! I believe this is all down to the media portrayal of fashion being the "in thing". Young girls are influenced so much by what they read in magazines, that they see that they must have the clothes, and that they will be ridiculed if they don't. Are you kidding me? What happened to everyone looking different? What happened to the saying of the world would be boring if we were all the same? Are we all turning in to robotic duplicates of the things we see in magazines?

Not only are there pressures on the necessity of material things, but also on having these perfect movie-style relationships. Every girl dreams of that big Hollywood kiss and the fairy tale wedding, but how often in reality does this happen? Movies and TV shows these days often portray this image of an "ideal" relationship, which is often completely unattainable. Now, I fully admit that I would love this perfect view of love, yet I am also realistic of this knowing full well that is will not happen. The pressure on a relationship being perfect is so strong these days. It may be part of the reason why the divorce rate is higher than what it has been in previous years - people are viewing their relationships as failures as they are basing them on what they have been shown in the media. In reality, are we all following an unhappy ending?

Now I move back over towards the fashion side of things; I want to talk about models. Have you ever seen a model without all her slap and amazingly perfect airbrushing which makes her skin look like porcelain? I shit you not, they look awful half the time. There are of course the lucky few who look good. Models in magazines and photo shoots are photoshopped within an inch of their lives - I am pretty sure you've seen loads of those before and after shots. Do you think the magazines ever stopped to think that them clicking their mouse to achieve "perfection" is all of a sudden stopping millions of teenage girls in their tracks? This airbrushing is putting so much pressure on girls and women to look like the models in these pictures, when in fact the models themselves don't even look like the pictures.....

This moves me nicely on to size zero. Now I could go on a very long rant about this quite easily. As a slightly chunkier girl, I do fall subject to this size zero ideal. However, I think this pressure can affect girls much younger than me. I have read stories where 7 year olds have dieted and thought that they look far too fat - when in fact they have a perfectly healthy BMI - simply due to this pressure put on them. This size zero thing really ruffles my feathers - a girl is usually self conscious about their body as it is without this added pressure. The media need to reevaluate their main concept of what makes a good looking women. In reality how many women are actually this size? The average size of a woman in the UK is a size 14, which I think looks stunning. Even more so when in comparison to this skeletal girl-like woman who is starting to look slightly like an alien. A real woman has curves, not bones. Just saying.

On a slightly more scientific note, there are constantly pressures on stereotypes. I am going to try and not delve too far in to this as I have planned a separate post. The main thing I am going to focus on right now is the gender stereotypes. There is so much pressure surrounding maintaining a gender stereotype; it is only seen as acceptable when a girl is really girly and wears pink, and when a boy is all rough and tumble and wears blue. Well here is a bombshell for you.....I don't like pink. What do you say to that, media? Media especially has pressure on the behaviour of a girl, or even of a boy, in certain social situations, and then they strive to act in this way, when really they want to do the opposite. Do you really think this makes them happy?

The worst thing about media pressures is the outcomes, and the horrible things that people, young girls especially, put themselves through just in order to conform to an idea set by a middle-aged person who has no interest but promoting their name. The saddest outcome is when young girls, some as young as 10, develop eating disorders in their attempt to conform to size zero and to the airbrushed models they see. This is a clinical disorder that young children are developing simply because of the pressure put on them. This is so unfair! The child is damaging their body permanently, which could be seriously bad for them in later life. People are also developing depression because they don't feel like they are "good enough" when in reality they are perfect as they are. This is something that I feel very upset about. As a girl who has suffered through things like this, I can sympathise at how awful they can feel on a daily basis, but this could all be avoided if the media didn't apply such forceful pressure.

There is also the issue of bullying. As the internet is become an increasingly popular form of media, forms such as social media are becoming a large part of people'd daily lives, and cyber bullying is ever increasing. Facebook apps such as ask.fm have played a large part in fueling this seemingly popular trend in cyber bullying - something that is not acceptable! The internet is acting as a mask for people to hide behind, in order to chuck abuse at another person. I have seen many people being asked questions on ask.fm like "why are you so fat?", or saying cruel jibes about their race, or asking why they do something. I think that this is all fueled by the pressure created by the media. If this issue is not addressed soon I can see it getting extremely out of hand.

Despite this being a very long rant so far (yes, there is more), I think there are some opportunities where media pressure can be seen as positive. I think the main example of this is with sports stars - however, this isn't exactly "pressure" in the same way. Since the London 2012 Olympics, there has been an increase of the focus on sports in schools and as extra-curricular activities. Now, whether you agree with me or not, as this has been focused on in the media, many people are now embracing these new opportunities, and keeping fit and possibly creating new sports stars! I find that some social media can also be positive, such as the likes of YouTube. Now, I am a keen YouTube fan (I spent a lot of time on it.....) and it is full of popular YouTubers of all different backgrounds - which you can now see with the help of "Draw My Life" videos. These are just normal people who haven't been airbrushed within an inch of their lives, and they are very easy to relate to. They address personal issues and almost become like friends to their viewers, and they basically offer support! This is a very positive outcome of social media, I think.

Finally, I want to talk about what I suggest to you guys regarding media pressures. I know that everyone is affected by media pressure, heck even I am, but I am hoping you will take my advice here. No matter what you read in the media, or what someone tells you, you are your own person. Don't be dictated to about what you should look like, what you should wear, or what you need to behave like, because if you listen to them I guarantee that you will not be happy. Take it from someone who has been there, done it and worn the t-shirt - being someone you are not is hell. Also, be strong and fight your corner - people will respect you more if you stand up for what you believe in. I know this is easier said than done, but try not to be affected by the shit you see in the media, because most the time it is just all a facade and a load of bullshit. Take the likes of TV and certain things you see on the internet with a pinch of salt. Most the time they are written by one person who is just trying to make some money, so they probably won't even apply to you. Last but not least: smile through all the shit, because one day you will look back on it and thank it for making you a stronger and better person. The people who bow and conform to everything they see will get haunted for it later along the line; they may not see it, but one day it will bite them on the ass.

That is all for now - this has to be the longest post ever.....

I hate shopping

Hello there, buddies!

Welcome to today's rant about the fact that I strongly dislike shopping. Yes, yes I know you are shocked to hear this from a girl, but I dislike fashion and shopping and all that shit. The only time that I find shopping relatively enjoyable is if I know that I need to go to one shop and I can get home.

I warn you now, this rant could get slightly out of hand and very extensive, so if you are easily offended or bored please look away now!

First of all, I would like to discuss the fact that I dislike trying things on, and fitting rooms in general. I really really do not like the fact that I have to change out of my clothes, as I spend a relatively long time in the morning putting my clothes on, doing my hair, and doing my make up. I  just literally cannot explain it. Having to change out of my normal clothes that I am already wearing to have to temporarily try on something, look in the mirror and take it off again. I just find this all very inconvenient and unnecessary. I find this more annoying in cheaper shops like Primark (no offence, Primark, I love you lots) as their changing rooms are not in the best of nick, and they just feel slightly gross. In comparison, there are changing rooms in shops like Next which are really quite nice, but I still find them so irritating. I have also found that not many changing rooms have stools/benches/seats for you to sit on when trying on certain items of clothing (e.g. jeans/bottoms). I don't know about you, but being able to sit down in something, especially skinny jeans, is very important. This then means that you have to either try and balance against the wall, or sit your ass on the floor....so unhygienic. It has been brought to my attention (by Vikki), that when she was in the changing rooms of a certain high street store, there was a significant amount of chewing gum stuck the the sides of a mirror....how bloody gross do people want to get?! There are a million bins all around places for you to put your gum, so why the fuck would you stick it to a mirror? Classy. I also get really agitated and irritated when someone makes me try something on. I don't know, maybe I am just a bit of a failure of a girl, or I have some genetic unbalance or something?

Then there is the issue of shop assistants. In my experience I have found that they go either way: they can be either very helpful, or they can simply not give a shit. I find it more annoying when they care too much, is that weird? I really dislike someone bugging me when I am in a store, simply because it means that I have to prolong my stay in a shop. Bleh. Whereas if they don't give a shit, it means you get get your stuff and go. So much easier. I am starting to think that I am really really weird....Does this apply to anyone else?

I now want to talk about clothes. Is it me or are they getting really skimpy and cheap looking? What happened to the good ol' days when the cardigans were full length, and the dresses didn't have the sides cut out of them? No offence to anyone who wears them as they look good on someone with a good figure. However, I am not a girl with a traditional good figure, and they just don't work on me. Also, fashion these days is just so beyond weird, but that is a conversation for a different day. I find that cheaper shops (I am a student, I cannot afford bloody Chanel) their stock can be awesome one day, then in a few weeks it all goes to shit? What is with that?!

Now comes a moment when I sympathise with men. Carrying bags is a bitch. I have been shopping with friends who have come out of shops £80 down with like 19308219 bags attached to their arms. There has only been once circumstance in my entire life when I have left town with more than 5 bags, and that was simply because I am getting far too fat and needed to get new summer clothes. I really hate it when I have more than 2 bags stuck in my hands or arms - they just get far too inconvenient. I find this occurs in other shops as you end up bumping into mannequins, people or stands. There have been numerous occasions where I have been on the receiving end of a bitch glare from someone I have hit with my bag. They also dig in to your hands and cut off the blood circulation, then you end up getting that horrible fuzzy feeling. It is so not worth it! If shopping is done online you don't have to carry any of that shit!

Also, it is me or are clothes literally quadrupling in price? There was a day not long ago when I could walk in to Primark, spend £15, and come out with like 5 new outfits. Now, I can't go in there and spend less than that on ONE outfit! Other shops, which were already way too expensive for my tiny budget, have doubled in price. Looks like I will be living off of charity shops soon.

I am also getting very irritated with the sizing of clothes. Like most girls, I get quite upset if i am over a certain size - yes I can be typically girly sometimes, shocking I know. Cheaper shops, I find, have dodgy sizing and I can go from like a 14 in one shop, to a 10 in another. It is a good day for everyone if I come out of a shop with a size 10, but as soon as I end up being a 14 we need to go home. Please can we not just have some universal size for every shop?! Please?!

Then there is the issue of mirrors. They are EVERYWHERE. I am one of those annoying girls who finds it necessary to check to see if my hair looks OK whenever I see a mirror. But then it works the other way as some mirrors make girls look bad, whereas others make a girl look pretty good. Not cool, dude.

And for my final point, I would like to talk about snooty bitches who judge you based on what shop you walk in to, and what outfit you buy. This annoys me immensely as I don't give a fuck about what other people think, but as soon as someone gives you that bitchy glare and looks you up and down, I want to hit them square between the eyes. Does this happen to any of you, or do I just have some bad temper issues?

OK, I am going to stop this rant now as I could go on forever.

If you have got this far in reading then that is 10 house points to your Hogwarts house!
